    Long Haul raided by FBI!
Wow. Yesterday the Long Haul infoshop/radical library was raided by the FBI and all the computers and book check out cards were confiscated. Come to the benefit tonight to support the Long Haul! www.longhaul.org

I had a horrible night at the desk with agro nutcases getting mad at me cause I have no magical powers over the computer. I hate computers. Throw them all out the windows please. Right now.

Someone just asked me for a book to help them get the wicked spirits out of him. He wondered if he should look in astronomy? This is going to be a loooong night.

    waffly
So we're starting a roving Sunday potluck brunch this weekend. I'm trying to branch out and make some vegan waffles. I've been on a waffle craze recently since my coworker gave me her old waffle maker. My pal S always puts whip cream on hers! Yum. This recipe looks easy but I'm curious about using flax seed to replace the typical egg ingredient...

    1 cup flour
    1 cup soymilk or water
    1 T oil
    1 T baking powder
    1 T maple syrup

I just want them to be fluffy is all. Anyhow, I'm realizing how much I love reoccuring, dependable events like my music jam or a regular brunch. Wish me luck!

We headed to the Marin County Fair today even though it was the day War performed and not Joan Jett! Yummm-goat milk.

I totally wish I grew up in the country and was a member of 4H. Instead I grew up in LA and as a girlscout we camped in the backyard of the scout leader in the middle of the city. Anyhow, I love county fairs. The theme was of course "green" so there was an abundance of bizarre art projects such as a plastic chair covered in bottle caps or a chair made of used milk cartons. So if green is a marketing ploy and most marketing ploys are emphemeral and fadlike then could the "greening" of America be just another passing theme? I hope not though driving a Prius and making bad art isn't going to do much to help the enivironmental crisis.

Just got back from four days in "the OC" (Anaheim, CA) for a library conference. I spent most of my time discussing and arguing about what graphic novels we want to nominate for the award list that comes out in January when we descend on Denver. I always picture the 50,000 librarians as a swarm descending on a city for a short time like wasps or killer bees and then flying back away. When I wasn't getting all indignant and feisty about why I thought As the World Burns or Demon Flowers was shitty I went to some free dinners and events. The people from publisher, First Second in NY took us bowling! It was fun and I love those shoes! I met some lovely fellow teen librarians from the East Coast and played wii and nintendo with some Floridians. Ahh, now I can breathe again-hack hack.

The lice has moved up a floor. I'm not going upstairs even though I want to look at magazines on my break.
I went to a birthday party the other night and the guy next to me was telling me how he met his new wife on okcupid.com even though he is surrounded by people and community in the bay area. I had to look at this website of course and its kind of amazing how you can bypass all the conversation needed to actually get to know people and their interests. Its kind of amazing how many people have sexual fantasies involving librarians with glasses. I guess the internet is modernity's answer to the corner pub. I still prefer a pint at the Starry Plough.

    lice update?!
Did you ever go to work in the morning to receive an email entitled Lice update?
Unfortunately, here at the Main library this is not a shocking occurence:

"As part of lice cleanup, IT staff is at this moment removing computers from the tables on the fourth floor where lice were sighted.

To be prudent, IT staff will don white tyvek body suits and gloves, since they will have to work closely around the tables. I am informing you of this to avoid any concerns that the presence of staff in tyvek suits indicates a toxic spill or other chemical emergency. It does not! The body suits and gloves are simply a precaution against the possibility of a crawling bug."

Shouldn't all IT staff everywhere don tyvek body suits? I know patrons who don large soup pots on their heads around the computers?

Today's my birthday and we went to lay on the beach in Bolinas to celebrate. They have a town run gas station called BoEnergy and its a nonprofit. They also have the cutest food coop I've ever seen with a free- box kind of closet. It was a beautiful day though the water was freezing.

You can see the tower on twin peaks from the beach.

So I'm knee deep in manga and need to read around 15 graphic novels in the next two weeks. Eeek! I just got one in the mail that's a series about raising an autistic child called With the Light. Yesterday my favorite writer for Sun magazine wrote about having to take his four year old to be tested for symptoms of autism. Are there more cases or are the typical "symptoms" just being labeled more often now?

Okay, I have this writing project and they're actually going to pay me for it. The problem is that I have a mac but I don't have ms word for mac which is the format they want. Word for MAC is $150!! Does anyone know where I can get it for cheaper?
    Thanks!

I feel lucky to have a job these days. The other city departments have to layoff people and there's tons of terrified, struggling people unable to pay their medical bills on my poor skills list. Instead of posts about creative projects on the cheap and budgeting, people are pleading for job advice...
I'm even being nicer to the patrons at work.
One cool thing about all the gas prices and food prices going through the roof is that it could force us to be more local. L and I are trying to buy food that comes from within a 100 mile radius. He keeps pointing out how easy it is with beer! I'm not much of a drinker but when I buy bread locally made I still don't know where the wheat comes from. Hmmm.
Our housemate brings home a lot of food not bombs veggies from the farmers market. Score.

Seeing this gypsy band I love on youtube today totally made my day. Check out Tarif de Hadoouks in a scene from the movie Latcho Drum.
Shelley and I have been trying to eat the Turkish rice pudding across the street for weeks now but we always miss it. They only cook it on certain days at random times. Yesterday we were finally successful and it was well worth the wait. I even liked the pudding "skin" on top.
In the meantime we tasted other puddings of the Tenderloin including the taro tapioca at the Vietnamese sandwich place on Larkin. Interesting.

A student just came in probably in her 30's or so and had a question. I showed her the answer in a book. She said, "Isn't it online? In my mind if its not online, it doesn't exist. The library of Alexandria burned to the ground." Argh, I can't stand people who walk around with their laptop instead of using a pen and paper. Am I becoming out of date already?

Our good friend gave us free passes for the New Living Expo that happens next weekend in SF. I thought we should give it a try since it would be free and all. Upon further investigation I am completely shocked at the assembly of quacks, con artists and charlatans that will be converging on Brannan St. You can learn how to prepare for 2012-the end of the world, get advice on how to have an extended, full body orgasm, and even use a Chanel to contact the angels. Now I just have to find someone to give the tickets to. Maybe our old neighbor, "purple lady" who was very concerned with the evolution of her chakras.

I made some great breakfast bars last night that should last a few days. The recipe basically called for flour, dried fruit, applesauce, raisins, OJ, vanilla, baking soda/powder and three egg whites. Since I'm hardly ever left with egg yolks and I didn't want to waste them, I looked up what to do with leftover egg yolks. I found a lot of reference to using them as a face mask. I told L and he said "I'll do it if you do it". We both have very soft skin now...Not that I would want to do this again but it was eggzactly perfect for the occasion. sorry, I know, I know.
Jane Eyre part 2 was finally on, I caught up to the BBC version in the book so I got to compare what they left out. Oooh-the scene where the crazy wife is dragging Jane's flaming wedding gown down the hall was intense!!

We watched Jane Eyre last night and it was so damn good I can't believe it. Very gothic. L's never read it so he has no idea who the bloodsucker is hiding out in the north tower. Two more days til I have to get two teeth out. I'm...VERY SCARED of being put out. L decided to invite some friends over while I'm toothless to hang out in my room and read stories aloud. Maybe good, maybe I'll just want to be alone in my agony.
My boss who has been here 41 years (yes 41 years) is leaving soon. I'll miss him but I think its time and all. The crazy thing is that there are two people here who've been here longer. Yikes.

I just went to a clothes swap. It was so much fun, kind of like everyone having there own garage sale all at once in the same room and its free. I found some nice shirts and a new raincoat which I really needed. Woohoo! There were some cute four year olds having a grand time playing dress up. Our houseguest left yesterday and we're getting used to a slower pace. I always feel like I see the town in a new way when I show someone all my regular haunts who's never seen them. They seem all magical all over again. The Albany landfill, Indian Rock, even the Starry Plough down the street.

I'm reading the most intense teen novel right now. Its about these three kids who get abused by their crazy mother and how the oldest who is only 13 has to protect his younger sisters. It is such an incredible book but it is making me so sad. We're reading it at the High School book club. So far the kids are having some positive reactions and its keeping them reading.
Somehow I really screwed up my neck and the pain is shooting down to my shoulder. The lame Dr just told me to take Ibuprofin and ice it. Its not really working.
